WHAT WE FOUND:

For many coffee lovers, Colombia has been considered a paradise of flavors given by its special conditions of high altitude and rich volcanic soils. Unlike many other coffee producers, Colombia grows only Arabica, and most qualify as specialty coffee.

Throughout the last century, Colombian coffee was sold around the world as an exclusive beverage. However, the growing demand in the last two decades brought dishonesty to the coffee business by mixing Colombian coffee with lower-quality beans to meet demand.

In each country you can find “100% Colombian coffee“, which despite being the third largest producer, does not produce such quantities. This change within the coffee business has not only hurt Colombian farmers and their reputation, but is also misleading the end customer.

Just as the climate and the soil determine the flavor of the wine, the altitude determines the quality of the coffee. In the world of coffee, there are two main species: Arabica and Robusta. Once roasted, they may look the same, but the exceptional conditions required for the Arabica to develop fully give the final cup a more pleasant rather than robust flavor.

Some of these special conditions are higher altitudes and lots of water, high humidity, rich and slightly acidic soil. Few countries meet such tropical conditions in what is called the “Coffee Belt”. Within these countries, Colombia has a privileged position. Not only is it located in the Andes Mountains, which gives it the perfect elevation to grow arabica coffee, but it also has 15 volcanoes to nourish the soils with the necessary acidity. That is why the product you are buying is not just coffee…
